Gwyneth Paltrow may've accidentally revealed a whole lot about Infinity War’s follow-up
(Spoilers for Infinity War and whatever the next movie is called below.)
The gut-punch ending of Avengers: Infinity War leaves us with a lot of unanswered questions. The most important being: Where the hell do we go from here? With more than half of our heroes banished to the realm of nonexistence and a seemingly unbeatable foe in possession of the ultimate weapon, what could possibly happen in the follow-up installment? Well, thankfully, Gwyneth Paltrow is out here dropping major spoilers that give as at least some idea of where our heroes are at in the next movie.
“Pepper and Tony have had a really long journey together,” Paltrow says, describing her character’s transformation from Tony Stark’s personal assistant to his fiancé in the latest film. “Now this decade later they’re married, and they have a child,” she continues. A decade later? A child? What in the what?
So, if this accidental bombshell is to be believed, the next Avengers movie will take place after a significant time jump, during which Pepper and Tony have their first child. The fact that Pepper Potts was pregnant was alluded to in Infinity War, but Iron Man having a full-grown child will certainly impact the way he approaches a second battle with Thanos, especially considering his complicated relationship with his own father. Some fans have already speculated that the next movie will center around the original Avengers getting their hands on the Time Stone and rewinding the mayhem of the previous film, so to speak. If the existing characters have had a decade’s worth of character evolution, that could make that decision to turn back the clock much more difficult.
Moments like this are an interesting slippage in Marvel’s dense production schedule, which juggles dozens of stars and movies and plot points amidst a constant promotional blitz. A recently resurfaced video showed Mark Ruffalo spoiling Infinity War back in 2017, so it’s extremely possible that this little bit of promotion from Paltrow holds a similar reveal. To find out if she’s right, we’ll just have to wait until the film is released in May 2019. Or, you know, for someone to give another loose-lipped press interview.
