Hall + Oates + Metallica = smooth darkness
If they’re pissed about that granola, Hall & Oates probably won’t be smooth jazzed about the latest concoction from the king of the unfortunate mash-up, Neil Cicierga. (Previous works include the delightfully inane Mouth Sounds, Mouth Silence, and “Say It Ain’t SoCal”) This time he has brought together vocals from the seminal metal song “Enter Sandman” by the once revered band Metallica and the music from Hall And Oates’ “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” to create “I Can’t Enter That (No Sandman).”
Cicierga is able to turn the song of childhood fears and torments into a melodic quasi-lullaby thanks to the soft rock stylings of the ’80s duo. It’s a pleasing yet pungent mixture that elevates both songs while pleasing neither set of fans, a notion that seems to be what makes Cicierga’s creations so entertaining.
