Here’s some excellent news for people who don’t get enough Hans Zimmer music from approximately one-third of all films released to theaters in the past decade: The German composer is taking his loud, clangy brand of cinematic soundscapes on a tour around the world this spring. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of stateside dates, all within driving distance of the Hollywood sign. (Zimmer has suggested to Billboard that he might tack on a few U.S. shows after he makes his way through Australia and Europe, though.)
The 59-year-old musician will tour with a 22-person core band, but will work with local orchestras as he goes. According to the press release, audiences can also expect some “very talented friends” to pop up from time to time. Zimmer tells Billboard that his biggest challenge in curating this live performance was breaking the “barriers between the audience and musicians” and creating something that transcends your usual night of movie music.
“It was literally about figuring out how to make each piece be a journey. I’ve done four Pirates of the Caribbean movies,” he explained. “so Pirates is a 14-minute piece. It’s a mini-symphony. It was always written as a cello concerto, but it just happens that it upgraded to a bit more of a rock ‘n’ roll cello because it has Tina Guo playing it on electric cello. With The Lion King [and vocalist] Lebo M, they all know his voice, but no one has seen him, so just having the original of the opening of The Lion King suddenly kick in [with him singing] is quite something.”
