Happyish has solid ingredients, but tastes terrible
In DVR Club’s first flat-out pan, Senior Editor John Teti and Editor-In-Chief Josh Modell argue over who hates Showtime’s new dark comedy Happyish more. (It’s John.) The series shot a pilot starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman before the actor’s death, and ultimately re-cast the role with Steve Coogan, who’s got a series of excellent series under his belt. This is not one of them. Coogan plays an ad man who’s having a midlife crisis, even though he has a lovely family and lots of money. (So boo-hoo for him.) The cast is great but the overstuffed writing weighs the whole thing down, and we can’t imagine too many people will want to suffer past the first episode. Enjoy!
