Hasbro already eulogizing its Jem movie with tribute album
So far, the only Synergy seen in the Jem And The Holograms movie has involved replacing most of the ’80s cartoon’s original elements with YouTube videos and Coachella-inspired costume design in order to court a millennial audience while making money off an older generation’s nostalgia. Now Billboard reports that Hasbro Studios and Sony Music/Legacy Recordings are releasing a tribute album ahead of the movie’s premiere because the show was about music, we suppose.
Truly Outrageous: A Tribute to Starlight Records features Holograms covers by real-life artists like Jukebox The Ghost’s Ben Thornewill, as well as former The Voice contestants Amanda Brown and Suzanna Choffel. The album is a kind of primer for the uninitiated (who also happened to like that terrible trailer), as well as a reminder that your stolen childhood can be sold back to you piecemeal. At least, that’s how we interpreted this statement that Hasbro CCO-bro Stephen Davis made to Billboard:
We really want this album to be a trip down memory lane for longtime fans to fall in love with Jem all over again…Music has always been at the core of the Jem series and there couldn’t be a better way to bring Jem back to the forefront of pop culture than to develop a tribute album with today’s contemporary emerging artists.
Truly Outrageous is available for preorder on iTunes and will be released on August 7.
