Having escaped Twilight, Kristen Stewart finds a vehicle worthy of her talents

Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper is a fascinating curiosity: a ghost story that’s also a leisurely character study, a cosmopolitan mood piece, and a late-breaking stalker thriller. It works best, though, as a showcase for Kristen Stewart and her nuanced body language—proof, again, that she’s a much better actress than the Twilight series ever allowed her to be. Last week, staff film critics A.A. Dowd and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky decamped for the A.V. Club studio to discuss this perplexing art drama and its rejuvenated star.
