Hayley Atwell tackles Greek tragedies in exclusive clip from The Oedipus Plays
The cancellation of Marvel’s Agent Carter was a huge disappointment for many Hayley Atwell fans, who have found little comfort in the “rich person makes amends” storyline of her new ABC series, Conviction. But at least the trailer indicates that Atwell will remain as clever and competent as ever, even if she can no longer literally throw the book (and her jab) at the bad guys. For those hankering for even more of Atwell’s badassery, The A.V. Club has this exclusive clip from Audible’s The Oedipus Plays.
Atwell’s as plucky as ever as Antigone, daughter of Oedipus, who defied the Theban king Creon to bury her brother—who was killed trying to lay siege to the city—only to end up as the subject in her own Greek tragedy. She boldly tells Creon that the law of the gods supersedes that of man, and otherwise wishes him luck trying to reason with Zeus’ thunderbolts.
Atwell is joined in the voice cast by Julian Glover (Game Of Thrones, The Empire Strikes Back) and Downton Abbey’s Samantha Bond. The complete audiobook—which consists of Sophocles’ Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone—is available now on Audible.
