HBO gives Treme a final, abbreviated season

Hours before Treme returned for its third season last night, co-creator David Simon confirmed that the network had given the low-rated yet critically championed show a fourth and final season—just like he and Eric Overmeyer had asked for last year. Still, it wouldn't be a David Simon story without the promise of a new day turning out to be less than ideal: "[HBO] fought very hard to give us half a loaf," Simon said of the reprieve, which HitFix later clarified to mean "four to six episodes" of jazz-and-human-resolve bread would be served up sometime next year, depending on how many hours they can knead out of the lump sum budget they've been handed. "So you have to do… more with less? Eh? Eh?" someone asked Simon, to which he responded with a jaded sigh.
