HBO orders comedy pilot from Larry Wilmore and Awkward Black Girl’s Issa Rae
Way back in the bygone year of 2012, The A.V. Club first pointed out that you should be watching Issa Rae’s web series The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl, a comedy about a frustrated twentysomething with a vivid imagination and a penchant for breaking into profane raps. It looks like The Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore and HBO were watching, too, as Deadline reports that the channel has picked up Insecure, a comedy pilot from Rae that she co-created and wrote with Wilmore.
The show was originally developed back in 2013, so now that Wilmore has his own show at Comedy Central, it’s unclear what his continued involvement will be. However, he is still serving as executive producer along with Rae herself. HBO is surely hoping that Rae’s fans will follow her, given that her online work has over 20 million views, and hundreds of thousands of YouTube subscribers. She also has a collection of essays, The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl, coming out February 10. Between this, Girls, and Sarah Silverman’s new show, HBO is clearly setting itself up as the place to hear funny women swear like crazy.
