Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn is all over Hollywood at the moment, penning screenplays, making deals, and having her back catalog combed over for potential projects to adapt. Now, Deadline is reporting that HBO has snatched up an adaptation of her debut novel, Sharp Objects, out of Netflix’s hands, securing the Amy Adams-starring series for itself. The show—which is being executive produced by UnREAL’s Marti Noxon—will star Adams as an investigative journalist who returns to her hometown to investigate the murder of a pair of preteen girls. While there, she wrestles with her own past and family life, and probably gives an iconic monologue or two. Competition for the series was apparently as fierce and bloody as a Neil Patrick Harris sex scene, with Netflix reportedly “going aggressively” after the show. Ultimately, though, it landed at the Home Box Office with an eight-episode, direct-to-series order.
