HBO picks up Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s political drama

The days of Adam McKay being a director of weirdo comedies seems to be pretty much over, thanks to his recent success as a director of weirdo dramas. Now, he has roped Will Ferrell into his serious turn, as the two of them are executive producing an HBO political drama series called Succession. HBO was first developing the project in June, and now Variety is reporting that it has received a 10-episode series order.

Succession is about the Roys, a fictional family that runs some kind of media empire and “is not only rich and powerful but also powerfully dysfunctional.” The show will apparently “explore family loyalty, international business, and the perils of power in the 21st century,” and it will probably remind us of another rich family that suddenly found itself with a lot more power than it used to have. In other words, it sounds pretty far removed from Step Brothers.

The series will star Brian Cox as the tough and aging patriarch Logan Roy, with Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin playing his sons and Sarah Snook playing his daughter.
