HBO picks up Julia Roberts’ adaptation of Today Will Be Different

According to a press release, HBO has begun developing a miniseries adaptation of Maria Semple’s novel Today Will Be Different with the TV branch of indie powerhouse Annapurna Pictures. The adaptation is being helmed by Julia Roberts, who is currently attached to star and produce the series, with Semple writing it. The book is about a woman named Eleanor Flood who wakes up one morning and decides to have a great, life-affirming day, but her plans fall apart when things immediately go off the rails. The rest of the story follows her throughout her day as she attempts to “navigate the knotty perils and sly grace of modern life.” The Today Will Be Different series still just has a development deal at HBO, so it hasn’t been formally picked up yet, but since the premium cable network reportedly won it in a “competitive bidding situation,” it will probably be invested in sticking with it.

This is the second Semple adaptation currently in the works, with Richard Linklater’s long-in-development Where’d Yo Go Bernadette movie finally moving forward back in May.
