HBO’s documentaries win big at the Peabody Awards
The winners in the entertainment and children’s category of the Peabody Awards were announced last week, with Netflix’s Master Of None, Jessica Jones, and Beasts Of No Nation each being recognized alongside Transparent, UnREAL, Mr. Robot, Wolf Hall, Black-ish, The Leftovers, Katie Morag, and Deutschland 83. Today, the winners in the documentary and education category were announced, with Variety reporting that four of the nine awards are going to HBO, three are going to PBS, and the other two to Showtime and Netflix.
HBO won for the autism documentary How To Dance In Ohio, with the Peabody people calling it a “closely observed” and “intimate” film that “doesn’t patronize its subjects or its viewer with easy sentimentality,” as well as for the Holocaust doc Night Will Fall. Smash hits The Jinx and Going Clear won as well, with the Peabody people highlighting the former’s surprise murder confession and the latter’s “blistering testimonials” from former Scientology officials.
PBS is getting Peabodys for India’s Daughter, a documentary about a 2012 gang rape in Delhi that is called a “deeply unflattering examination of the misogyny embedded in Indian society,” as well as for undocumented immigrant film Don’t Tell Anyone and the Frontline report “ISIS In Afghanistan.” Netflix won for its Nina Simone doc What Happened, Miss Simone? and Showtime won for its holographic resurrection of Marlon Brando in Listen To Me Marlon.
The awards themselves will be handed out at a ceremony in New York on May 21.
