HBO un-renews The Brink, cancels it instead

After failing to call “no take-backs” when it was renewed back in July, The Brink has been un-renewed and canceled by HBO. It may be surprising to learn that television works on playground rules like this, but it is precisely those very playground rules that prevent network execs from pushing each other or hogging the swings. Without those rules in place, TV would descend into Lord Of The Flies-like madness.

Anyway, like we said, HBO renewed its dark comedy The Brink a few months ago, but The Hollywood Reporter says that the network has now changed its mind and canceled the show instead. HBO also released a bizarrely Dear John Letter-sounding statement, saying that it “cannot give The Brink the attention it deserves for a second season” and that the people at HBO “are proud of the first season and wish everyone involved in this show the very best.” THR didn’t say anything else, but we assume the letter also included the phrases “it’s not you, it’s me” and “I hope we can still be friends.”
