The long-in-the-works Kurt Cobain documentary by director Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays In The Picture, Crossfire Hurricane) will be released next year, and will make its U.S. debut on HBO. Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck is executive-produced by Cobain’s 22-year-old daughter Frances Bean Cobain, making it the first authorized documentary of the Nirvana singer, who died in 1994. That connection means that the filmmakers had “access to Kurt Cobain’s archives, home to his never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, personal archives, family archives and songbooks. The film features dozens of Nirvana songs and performances as well as previously unheard Cobain originals.” Morgen claims to have unearthed—presumably with Frances’ help—200 hours of audio plus tons of visual art, journals, and photos (including the just-released one above). Conspicuously absent from today’s announcement was Courtney Love, Cobain’s widow and Frances Bean’s mother, from whom she has reportedly been estranged for years. Frances Bean now controls the rights to her father’s image (though not his music), while Courtney maintains all yelling rights.
