Hell’s Club: Another Night continues its ultimate movie mashup insanity
Late last summer, French filmmaker Antonio Da Silva caused a viral sensation with his short film Hell’s Club, an incredibly ornate and brilliantly edited movie mashup that gleefully transcended time, space, and genre to bring seemingly every memorable badass in movie history together in one place. Da Silva’s film imagined a seedy nightclub where multiple Tom Cruises and Al Pacinos interacted with the likes of RoboCop, Blade, Tony Manero, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Mask. This was obviously a combustible mix, and Hell’s Club ended with a memorable shootout that left several characters dead. Several months and millions of YouTube views later, there is at last a sequel. Hell’s Club: Another Night keeps the party going, this time almost twice as long as the first installment.
Appropriately, the film begins with a memorial for those brave movie characters who perished in the first installment, including Pacino’s Carlito Brigante. But then, the music changes to a thudding disco beat, and a legend appears: “There is a place where all fictional characters meet. Outside of time. Outside of all logic.” And just like that, Hell’s Club is back in business. This time, Luke Skywalker, Pee-wee Herman, Betelgeuse, and several James Bonds are in attendance. Daft Punk act as the deejays, and their musical selections include “Axel F,” “I Feel Love,” “Le Freak,” and the Psycho theme. This time, some unwanted extraterrestrial visitors attempt to spoil the fun. Experienced alien fighters like Will Smith and Sigourney Weaver are on hand to quell things, but the situation gets gnarly enough at one point to warrant the use of Barber’s “Adagio For Strings.” In all, Hell’s Club very much manages to live up to its name the second time around.
