Here are the first nominees for the new World Video Game Hall Of Fame

Despite the late Roger Ebert’s insistence to the contrary, it’s becoming an accepted fact that video games are a kind of art, even if Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric doesn’t provide any evidence to support that fact. It was only a matter of time before some enterprising souls decided to make a hall of fame for video games, and now we’ve received news of the first games eligible for induction into that hall. Yahoo! News reports that the inaugural round of nominees for the World Video Game Hall Of Fame have been announced, and it looks like Leisure Suit Larry will have to sit this round out.

The Strong Museum in Rochester, New York, will be home to the World Video Game Hall Of Fame, a site that also houses the National Toy Hall Of Fame. To qualify for consideration, games must meet a somewhat subjective set of criteria: games “must have icon status, prove to be more than a passing fad, and leave a mark on other games or forms of entertainment, pop culture or society in general.” The complete list of games nominated this year is below, and while The Strong has received thousands of nominations since the announcement of the hall in February, it narrowed down a set of 15 contenders. The final honorees will be chosen by an international panel of “journalists, scholars, and other video game experts.” Sorry, Conan O’Brien—better luck next year.
