Here are the nominees for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards
So who are the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, anyway? A topic to ponder another time, as this morning, just one day after announcing hosts Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh (who’s now both a host and nominee, thanks to Killing Eve) for this year’s ceremony, the HFPA unrolled its list of nominees for the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards at the traditional, ungodly hour of 5:10 a.m. PT.
Leading this year’s nominees in the TV realm is The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, which walked away with six nominations; it’s matched in the film arena by Vice, which also scored six nominations. Adam McKay’s satirical look at the life and career of Dick Cheney is closely followed by The Favourite—whose core trio of Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz were all nominated—as well as A Star Is Born and Green Book. All of those got five nominations each.
In terms of surprises, we’re tickled to see Billy Porter honored for his wonderful work on Pose and Elsie Fisher nominated for her wise-beyond-her-years performance in Eighth Grade, even if she has basically zero chance of winning. And the HFPA’s comedy/drama binary continues to divide dramedies in interesting ways, as BlackKklansman was nominated for Best Drama (which, it should be noted, is how director Spike Lee and star John David Washington categorize the film) and Green Book for Best Comedy.
Congratulations to all awakened by a celebratory phone call, and to all whose slumber remains undisturbed by show-business ambition. The 2019 Golden Globe Awards will air live on January 6 on NBC.
