Here are the winners from the 93rd Academy Awards
The 93rd Academy Awards got right down to business, with Regina King walking onto the stage as the opening credits and teases for upcoming presenters rolled, and then she just… started handing out awards. There was no awkward comedy sketch or song or Neil Patrick Harris magic routine, just a very long setup for how special each of the nominees are and then the actual presentation of the Oscar. It was surprising, but that’s just how things are these days.
As it turned out, though, that opening segment was a model for how the rest of the show would go: Celebrities introduced the categories, gave little personal introductions for the nominees about how they started in the movie business or what their favorite movie was when they were growing up, and then the winner would get up on the stage and make a surprisingly long speech. There were very few clips shown of the nominees, there was no ongoing thing where they teased each of the Best Picture nominees, and the only sketch or skit was Lil Rel Howery’s Oscars Trivia thing, which gave us Andra Day getting bleeped and Glenn Close shaking her butt. (Unless you count the “In Memoriam” segment being played at light-speed as a sketch.) Other than that, it was awards, awards, awards.
But hey, how about those awards? Chloé Zhao’s dominant run through awards season was capped off with a win for Best Director, making her the first woman of color to win that award (and only the second woman ever), and then her impressive run got another cap when Nomadland won Best Picture—with the award being handed out before Best Actor and Best Actress in a break from tradition, seemingly foreshadowing a Best Actor win for Chadwick Boseman that did not end up happening (more on that shortly).
Elsewhere, Soul won Best Animated Feature and Best Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross beat themselves in that category with some help from Jon Batiste), H.E.R.’s “Fight For You” from Judas And The Black Messiah won Best Original Song (as heard earlier in the day at the Oscars pre-show event), and Mank landed a few wins as a reminder that the Motion Picture Academy loves movies about old-fashioned Hollywood mythology. Frances McDormand’s Best Actress win added yet another trophy to Nomadland’s awards season haul, and then—in what will surely go down as one of the most widely unpopular Oscar flubs in history—Best Actor went to Anthony Hopkins for The Father rather than Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. People are going to be mad about that one for a long time.
Here’s the full list of winners and nominees. For a look back at our speedier Oscars reactions, check out our liveblog.
