Here’s a crazy trailer for George Lucas’ new animated movie Strange Magic
For decades, movie fans were curious to see what fabulous cinematic worlds George Lucas would take them to after he was done with Star Wars. Then Red Tails came out, and movie fans decided that maybe they weren’t that curious anymore. Now, though, with Lucas washing his hands of Lucasfilm, Disney is here to dig up any fabulous cinematic worlds that he never got around to making movies out of. That’s where Strange Magic comes in. It’s based on an original story written by Lucas, but he’s almost certainly not involved at all beyond that—which means it’s OK to like it, Internet.
The first trailer, which you can see above, doesn’t explain very much about Strange Magic, but it does show off its impressive animation and fantastical fairy world. There are also people who are very clearly good guys battling against people who are very clearly bad guys, just in case anyone wanted proof that George Lucas came up with this. The story was supposedly inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but how much it actually takes from the play remains to be seen. At the very least, we don’t remember Shakespeare putting in so many weirdly out-of-place modern pop songs.
Anyway, Strange Magic stars Evan Rachel Wood, Alan Cumming, Maya Rudolph, Alfred Molina, Kristin Chenoweth, and teen heartthrob Peter Stormare. It’ll be in theaters on January 23.
