Here’s what Metallica and Lady Gaga’s Grammys duet should have sounded like
While they’re never going to live up to the Oscars in terms of 2017 award show fuck-ups, last month’s Grammy Awards did feature a few technical glitches that got in the way of a perfect show. Most notably, a much-touted Lady Gaga-Metallica collaboration suffered a setback when James Hetfield’s microphone didn’t work on “Moth Into Flame,” turning his planned duet into a Gaga solo. (It was frustrating enough that Hetfield finished the set by angrily tossing his guitar off stage; Lars Ulrich later told James Corden that he hadn’t seen his bandmate that angry “in 20 years.”)
Now, the artists have released the dress-rehearsal footage of the set, so that fans can hear how the song was originally intended to be played. (Hetfield might still be mad, by the way, given that Metallica’s VEVO page titles the video “How It SHOULD Have Sounded”.) And, credit where it’s due, it’s a pretty great performance, with Hetfield and Gaga’s vocals blending well together on the Hardwired…To Self-Destruct track.
