Here’s why Canadians say “eh” and why everyone else should start

We’ve all done it. Overwhelmed with jealousy over Canada’s free health care, we imitated our friends up north by adding “eh” to the end of a sentence, knowing it’s the one, true way to own them. And, in a new piece on Atlas Obscura, writer Dan Nosowitz acknowledges how, no, Canadians “are not particularly amused when you eagerly point out their ‘eh’ habit.” More interestingly, however, are the ways some Canadians have embraced it “as an element of Canadian patriotism.”
In arriving to that latter point, Nosowitz spends a good chunk of the article exploring the word from a linguistic perspective. In the process, he reveals that “eh” can take on any number of meanings, depending, of course, on the context.
