Here's an exclusive, never before commercially released version of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze"
Legacy Recordings isn’t set to drop Jimi Hendrix Experience: Miami Pop Festival, the first ever release of one of the guitar icon’s most storied performances, until Nov. 5, but A.V. Club readers get an exclusive listen to one of the record and show’s most well-known songs below. The version of “Purple Haze” below was recorded in May of 1968 at the Miami Pop Festival, which was organized by eventual Woodstock organizer Michael Lang and Ric O’Barry, who—no joke—had been the dolphin trainer on Flipper. The Jimi Hendrix Experience headlined the festival, which took place at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida.
Never before available in any commercially released format, Jimi Hendrix Experience: Miami Pop Festival will be in stores Nov. 5 as both a single CD and a limited edition numbered double LP pressed on 200 gram vinyl. Legacy is also releasing an expanded home video edition of the American Masters documentary Jimi Hendrix — Hear My Train A Comin’ that same day.
