Yes, Spooky Season is very much upon us and the streaming sites are stocking up on all the October-appropriate frights. HBO Max is no different and will be onboarding a few well-known scares, such as The Haunting and a couple of Dracula hits. The streamer is also shining the spotlight on some not-so-scary monsters like Sesame Street resident Grover, who is getting his very own original special, the Monsters at the end of this Story. See? Plenty of creatures to stream, for better or worse.
October is also the last month before a tumultuous election, so some platforms are taking the month to add content that screams “VOTE! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE VOTE.” The West Wing cast is coming together for a long-awaited reunion special titled A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote. It’ll be joined by a number of documentaries like John Lewis: Good Trouble, Equal, and The Soul Of America, all meant to emphasis the immense amount of work ahead.
But if you’d rather not think of your Halloween in the house or our shitty political climate, HBO Max is adding some good old-fashioned escapism in the form of some original content, like The Undoing, a dramatic limited series starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, or docuseries The World Of Calm, which stars… well, everyone, from Mahershala Ali to Lucy Liu. Let’s not forget that HBO Max is also a place to catch up on HBO series like Lovecraft Country, which will air its season finale next month.
If none of that strikes your fancy, consider this: Cats is coming. We know you were originally hesitant to spend your cash just to see it in a theater (although, had we known that going to the theater could equate to a death wish only months later, we might have encouraged you to get out of the house while you could), but now it’s on the service that you’re already paying for.
