Holy hell, it's the trailer for another Conjuring spinoff, The Nun
Your sense of calm is done. The relaxing break from the universe of The Conjuring was fun, but that peace is on the run, chased by the nightmarish one known as The Nun. It may or may not stun, but there’s no question this franchise has won, as American audiences refuse to shun. Um….burgers need a bun?
Seriously, though, who would’ve thought back in 2013 that James Wan’s haunted-house tale would’ve spawned not just a sequel, but a whole damn cinematic universe? Aside from the sequel, we’ve gotten the two Annabelle spinoff films, and now a prequel movie that delves into the origin story of the malevolent Catholic spirit that terrorized Ed and Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring 2. Set well before the events of any of those films, The Nun follows a troubled priest (Demian Bichir) and a young novitiate about to take her final vows (Taissa Farmiga, ensuring the Farmiga family continues to dominate this franchise) as they travel to a cloistered abbey in Romania to investigate the suicide of a young nun. Once there, they uncover a nasty secret, one that will soon threaten their lives, and possibly guilt them into calling their parents more often while demanding a few Hail Marys in penance.
With a script from It co-writer Gary Dauberman and Corin Hardy, director of the surprisingly good The Hallow, behind the camera, hopefully this is yet another extension of the Conjuring franchise that, much like Annabelle: Creation, actually keeps both the smarts and scares alive. If it does, we promise to continue avoiding saying shit like, “The Nun gets back in the habit of scaring people.” The film opens September 7, 2018.
