Homegrown

Homegrown

Deemed unreleasable after negative test screenings in Seattle, the star-packed suspense film Homegrown—you can ignore the "comedy that goes to your head" tag on the box—was instead shunted off to direct-to-video land. While it may seem odd that a movie with such apparent potential would be virtually buried, consider it a case of Homegrown settling to its natural level. Billy Bob Thornton, Hank Azaria, Ryan Phillippe, and Kelly Lynch play a group of pot dealers who, after the death of their boss (John Lithgow), attempt to harvest and sell his expansive crop of primo weed. Along the way, they have to defuse internal tensions, pretend Lithgow remains alive, and cope with shady guest stars Jon Bon Jovi, Judge Reinhold, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ted Danson. The film has its moments, most of them courtesy of the fine cast, but other than its pedigree and occasional flashes of wry humor, there's virtually nothing to set Homegrown apart from any other suspense film on the video shelves. Even when it's Thornton and Azaria descending into paranoia and delusion, it still feels like material better suited for Jim Belushi and Emilio Estevez. Director Stephen Gyllenhaal appears to have paced things with the already stoned in mind, but even the most undiscriminating audience will probably end up bored.
