If you’re between the ages of 25-35, Fox’s animated version of The X-Men is probably the definitive X-Men team in your mind. The show, which ran from 1992-97, dealt with a lot of pretty heavy topics for a kids show about superheroes, including racism, AIDs, and the Holocaust. It was also so beloved that Marvel actually launched a comic based on the series last year.
Anyway, with X-Men: Apocalypse coming out this week, the folks at Screen Junkies felt like it was time to make an Honest Trailer of TV’s X-Men adaptation.
Looking back at it 20 years later, a few things are clear. First of all, this was way better than most commercial children’s television. It’s actually pretty smart and well written. Secondly, Jean Grey’s costumes and weird orgasm sounds were not appropriate for children’s television. Finally, this show really was the most ’90s thing imaginable. There was seriously a “makin’ copies” reference. And if the movie Sentinels had been this bumbling, it would have been a very different franchise.
