Hot Topic’s Suicide Squad line is very on brand
Everyone who has ever been to an American high school in the last few decades is probably familiar with the Hot Topic aesthetic. It usually involves a lot of black T-shirts featuring characters from children’s cartoons, unnecessary chains, an abundance of skulls, and merch for bands that used to be edgy but are pretty mainstream now, like Nirvana or Metallica. Basically, it’s like being goth without having to commit to a certain cynical worldview, which makes it the perfect outlet for a specially designed line of Suicide Squad merchandise. After all, that movie looks like it’s going to be the cinematic equivalent of black T-shirts, unnecessary chains, and an abundance of skulls anyway, so pairing it with Hot Topic is like combining chocolate and peanut butter, if the peanut butter is really just more chocolate.
The Hot Topic website says the collection will be available on July 22 (which, sadly, is too late for this year’s Gathering Of The Juggalos), and it almost entirely consists of stuff with Harley Quinn or the Joker on it. For example, there’s this replica of the “Daddy’s Lil Monster” shirt that Margot Robbie’s Quinn wears in the movie:
And this recreation of some of Jared Leto’s awful Joker tattoos:
Or, if you prefer Batman: The Animated Series to Suicide Squad, here’s a “Whatever You Say, Mr. J!” tank top:
And for the sentimental clown prince of crime who’s finally ready to settle down, a set of Joker and Harley Quinn rings:
What’s that? You want Funko Pop figures? They’ve got Funko Pop figures for days. Still not impressed? Then this Harley Quinn-branded hair dye should do the trick:
