House Of Cards declares “the reign of the middle-aged white man is over”
No point beating around the bush, we guess. In the newest promo for the final season of House Of Cards, the newly anointed President Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) reminds viewers that her husband of thirty years is now dead and declares “the reign of the middle-aged white man is over.” Throughout the teaser, we’re reminded again and again that this is a fresh start for the hit Netflix series that recently ousted its star, Kevin Spacey, after numerous allegations of sexual assault were made against him.
While it’s a certainly a fresh start in a meta context, this promo bends over backwards to make the case that this is a major shift narratively as well. “Whatever Francis told you the last five years, don’t believe a word of it,” Wright says while looking down the barrel of the camera, presumably addressing the viewer at home. “It’s going to be different for you and me.” With no Frank there to hold her back, Claire seems more than ready to step into the shoes of schemer-in-chief. When the sixth and final season premieres on November 2, we’ll see just how far she’s willing to go now that she’s flying solo.
