How Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull echoes earlier Indy films

Is it homage or just shamelessly ripping off one’s own previous work to incorporate so many visual callbacks in a film? That seems to be the inherent question in this montage that shows how often Steven Spielberg and George Lucas reference the earlier Indiana Jones adventures in Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. Put together by WhoIsPablo (director and editor Pablo Fernandez Eyre), this mix is similar to his Star Wars compilation that shows all the times that George Lucas put in visual callbacks in the prequels to his earlier films.

Is this just a case of reusing shots and scenarios to show a continuing legacy while winking at the audience? Or is it something worse—hoping to tap into subconscious nostalgia and riding that wave to get people to accept the new product? It’s hard to know, but is worth considering while watching this compilation.
