How To Be A Player
In Def Comedy Jam's maiden voyage into the world of film, Bill Bellamy portrays a silver-tongued lothario who schools his dim-witted homies in the art of seduction. His sister, the fat 'n' sassy Natalie Desselle, disapproves of his wanton, amoral antics, and plots with her homegirls for his comeuppance. Surely, the young sinner will repent and follow the road to virtue. Or will he? Therein lies the central conflict of the film, and while How To Be A Player is just as crude, sexist and moronic as you would expect given its similarity to the recent Booty Call, it's also surprisingly entertaining, due largely to a lightning-fast pace, a terrific soundtrack and some amusing turns by comedians associated with the Def Comedy Jam series. While smarmy MTV personality Bellamy is surprisingly adequate as the cocky protagonist, he's frequently upstaged by Phat Beach's Jermaine "Big Hugg" Hopkins, a young performer whose massive girth is matched only by his abundant wit, charm and effortless charisma. His presence alone makes How To Be A Player an enjoyable romp.
