“Hulk My Hogan” is a delirious mashup of rap and wrestling greats

Back in January, DJ Cummerbund favored the internet with “Under Starships,” an epic mashup that united Nicki Minaj with such departed heroes as Freddie Mercury and David Bowie in some kind of interdimensional after-party. That video also demonstrated DJ Cummerbund’s fondness for classic wrestling, via a posthumous cameo by Randy “Macho Man” Savage. The wrestling theme continues, as does the parade of deceased music industry superstars, in the DJ’s latest video, “Hulk My Hogan (Rap Party In Heaven Mix),” a seven-and-a-half-minute epic that draws upon the talent of such long gone greats as The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Adam “MCA” Yauch, Nate Dogg, and Michael Jackson.

As for the wrestling content, those who have an aversion to the disgraced Hulkmeister need not worry. The Hogan content is largely limited to the weirdly suggestive chorus: “Hey, girl, you wanna hulk my hogan? / Yeah, boy, I wanna hulk your hogan!” Savage is again well represented here, rapping in that inimitable, growly voice of his. The real coup, though, is scoring what appears to be a newly filmed introduction by legendary wrestling announcer “Mean Gene” Okerlund, now a semi-retired man of 73.

Its creator calls the video “a simulation of what a rap party in Heaven might look like featuring all of the greatest rappers that we’ve lost over the years.” And the video pretty much lives up to that billing, apart from an incongruous verse by the still-living Busta Rhymes. Songs interpolated in “Hulk My Hogan” include 2Pac’s “What’z Ya Phone #,” The Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” (the video for which is also heavily sampled), and TLC’s “Waterfalls.” It all flows together quite nicely, suggesting a peaceful realm where rap feuds and wrestling feuds are set aside in favor of getting together and having a good time.
