Hulu green-lights The Runaways and Beau Willimon’s mission-to-Mars series
It’s upfronts season, that most wonderful time of the year for TV executives, who are able to put their networks’ and/or platforms’ best face forward while also shedding some dead weight. Hulu has the stage today, and The A.V. Club will have a full round-up later, but some news has already made its way out of the conference room: Marvel’s The Runaways has just scored a series order.
The adaptation comes from Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and is a project fans and outlets have been following closely since it was first announced. We’ve already gotten the lowdown on the cast, which is full of the kind of fresh faces we’d like to see playing a team of heroes in the making, who get the bad news that their parents are supervillains. Hulu initially ordered a pilot, but the series pickup shows a renewed commitment.
Elsewhere in this morning’s announcements, we learned that Beau Willimon (House Of Cards) is launching a small-screen expedition to Mars with The First. The series is about space exploration and colonization, but also “the human spirit,” in case you worried this would just be some unfeeling voyage into the void.
