Hulu’s Best In Show is down to its Final Four; mock Emily VanDerWerff’s choices here
The Hulu Best In Show competition rolls on, and it’s nice to see that you agree with me, America, since you chose all of my picks last week, which I wasn’t expecting. So now that Community, Game Of Thrones, Hannibal, and Orphan Black have moved on, I’m forced to make some even more difficult decisions than usual. As always, check out Hulu to cast your votes. Vote early, and vote often.
Here is why I chose the way I did.
Game Of Thrones vs. Orphan Black: So it was Orphan Black and not Arrow that turned into the Cinderella story at this tournament (and appropriately so). I imagine that if Orphan Black—which still has to be considered the underdog against these other three shows, no?—wins, then Tatiana Maslany will be hoisted atop the shoulders of the cast and crew, Jimmy Valvano style. But as much as I would like to see that gif sweep the Internet—and you know it would happen—I want even more to see Game Of Thrones advance here, because when Game Of Thrones is on its game, as it so often was in season three, then there are few shows on TV that can match it. If Orphan Black wins, I’ll be thrilled. But Game Of Thrones is the correct choice. My pick: Game Of Thrones
Community vs. Hannibal: It feels weird and somehow… dishonest to have picked against Community twice in this tournament, but it’s had the misfortune of coming up against one of my four or five favorite shows ever in Mad Men, then coming up against one of my two favorite shows of the moment in Hannibal. Which is to say that it just can’t win, unless it defeats Hannibal, in which case I will be more than happy to see it in the finals. Honestly, this week is pretty great, right? Because I don’t really care who wins each match. But Hannibal is on a serious roll right now, and I just don’t know that Community—even at its resurrected best—can match what Hannibal is up to. Now, if we pitted Community season two against Hannibal season two… I don’t even want to think about that. So let’s not. My pick: Hannibal
I’ll be back next week with extended commentary on the final match!
