In the latest bit of entertainment news designed to elicit a chorus of “Wow, they’ll remake anything,” Deadline reports Constantin Films will reboot the Wrong Turn franchise. That’s right, franchise—the 2003 film starring Eliza Dushku as someone her Buffy The Vampire Slayer character would have no qualms about leaving to die in the woods spawned five hillbilly-horror sequels devoid of anything but some lackluster out-of-frame scares, the last of which was released in 2014.
Alan B. McElroy, who created the cannibals-and-campers franchise and went on to pen Halloween 4 and Spawn, is once again writing the script, with The Domestics director Mike P. Nelson attached to helm. The future adventures of Three Finger and the rest of his cannibal ilk are being described as “a timely and topical meditation on society and its issues.”Now, you might be wondering how exactly a property that makes Deliverance look positively progressive could capture contemporary social mores, so here’s the rest of the synopsis: “a cross-country hiking expedition puts a group of friends in the land of an inclusive society, where they soon discover they are under a different rule of law, and may not be the victims they thought they were.” We’re already shuddering at this particular combination of “inclusive society” and “victims,” so maybe Constantin Films is on the right track.
