Ian Somerhalder says The Vampire Diaries will end after next season
Much like the undead monsters of its title, The CW’s Vampire Diaries is pretty tough to kill. Series star Nina Dobrev decided to leave the show at the end of last season, which could’ve been a huge blow, but The Vampire Diaries has managed to carry on by shifting its focus to the two vampire brothers played by Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. Now, though, almost a year to the day since Dobrev made her announcement, Somerhalder has made a similar one.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Somerhalder said “we have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice” while speaking at WalkerStalkerCon in Nashville, indicating that the show’s upcoming season will be its last. (The Vampire Diaries, like every other show on The CW, was renewed back in March.) However, it’s important to note that this news isn’t official yet, as The Hollywood Reporter adds that a spokesperson for The CW claims “no decision has been made when it comes to the future of the show.” Still, with various actors’ contracts ending and the show’s ratings falling behind other CW hits like The Flash, it does seem as if its days are numbered.
