Last week, news hit the Internet that Idris Elba was in talks to play a villain—maybe even a Klingon one—in the upcoming Star Trek 3. Naturally, that means that this week there’s news that Idris Elba might be in the film, but won’t be playing a Klingon in the upcoming Star Trek 3. Simon Pegg, star and writer of the Enterprise crew’s newest adventure, has stated that in no certain terms that Elba will not be portraying a Klingon, or Khan for that matter. Pegg addressed the rumors this week in an interview with Absolute Radio:
“That’s not true. No, no, no. I heard there’s a rumor he’s been spoken to about stuff, so he may be in the film but he won’t be a Klingon. [Laughs] Or maybe he will.”
It would appear that J.J. Abrams left behind a “mystery box” on the set of Star Trek Into Darkness for writer Pegg and director Justin Lin to use in the marketing for this new space opera: In 2013, Pegg also denied that Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, a rumor that turned out to be true. So it’s still possible that Pegg is bluffing and Elba could portray a Klingon who wants to turn the Klingon Empire into a legit real estate business run by Robert’s Rules Of Order, but only time will tell.
Star Trek 3 will hit theaters on July 8, 2016.
