If the glove doesn’t fit, the Television Critics Association loved it

The members of the Television Critics Association paused their summer press tour today to honor the best in television from the past year, proving once more that such honors ought to be bestowed by the people who have their faces pressed against the medium for much of their waking hours. The big winner was FX, specifically The People V. O.J. Simpson, which won the awards for Program of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries, and Specials, while earning Sarah Paulson the Individual Achievement in Drama trophy for her portrayal of prosecutor/recipient of controversial haircut Marcia Clark. The first installment of American Crime Story was joined in the winners’ circle by its channelmate The Americans, which took home its second consecutive award for Outstanding Achievement in Drama.

It was a good year to make television about real-life crimes: Making A Murderer won for Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming, though justice-seeking dreamboats Dean Strang and Jerry Buting were sadly not in attendance. (You’ll always be The A.V. Club’s winner for Outstanding Achievements in Unassuming ’90s Fashions, Dean.) The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s Heritage Award was accepted by star Valerie Harper and co-creator Allan Burns, while Lily Tomlin stopped by to claim a Career Achievement Award, confirmation that the TCA was hip to Tomlin’s singular body of work months before the Screen Actors Guild. Elsewhere, the TCA membership flaunted its impeccable taste by recognizing Mr. Robot, Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, Black-ish, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom, and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.
