Iggy Pop to play a masked killer in Dario Argento’s new movie
Pitchfork reports that Iggy Pop is set to star in Dario Argento’s next movie, an announcement that would have blown people’s minds 30 years ago but now elicits emotions ranging from cautious optimism to intense embarrassment for all involved. Anyway, the movie is called The Sandman and is based on a German fairy tale about a boogeyman-type figure who steals the eyes of children who refuse to go to sleep. Here’s how the production team describes it:
THE SANDMAN tells the story of Nathan, a young student in the city who struggles to forget his childhood trauma at the hands of the serial killer dubbed “The Sandman”. Nathan killed The Sandman years ago, on Christmas Eve, after he witnessed the murder of his mother…until he sees the beautiful woman who lives in the apartment across the way dying at the hands of that same masked killer. This brutal murder plunges Nathan into an odyssey into the night country of his past, his dreams…and the buried secrets of The Sandman. Christmas is coming, and so is The Sandman.
Pop will play the titular Sandman, whose murder weapon of choice is a sharpened melon spoon he uses to scoop out his victims’ eyes, presumably while wearing black leather gloves. With any luck, Pop will also do the soundtrack, which no matter what would be better than that Dani Filth song at the end of Mother Of Tears. (“Goblin,” as always, is also an acceptable answer.)
The Sandman is currently attempting to raise funds on Indiegogo, where diehards who insist on defending Dario Argento’s Dracula can throw in a few bucks to help make the production a reality.
