In-debt Ticketmaster goes solo
According to Reuters, the now independent Ticketmaster–which has just spun off from its parent company IAC–will be starting out with a $750 million debt. (Hmm, maybe they should think about implementing service charges or something.) This is in the face if imminent competition from concert promoter Live Nation, which is itself set to cut ties with Ticketmaster later this year. Still, the suits at Ticketmaster insist the company expects to see profit growth in 2009–and have even vowed to help up-and-coming artists market themselves, especially now that most touring musicians make more money playing live than they do from recording revenue. Ah, Ticketmaster, you're the very soul of altruism. Now please explain again why you're charging me $30 in fees on $99 worth of Boston/Styx tickets this summer.
