Incredibles 2, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse lead Annie Awards nominations

Though it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, Disney is once again dominating the Annie Award nominations this year, with Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet leading the pack with 11 and 10 nominations, respectively. As Variety reports, the Mouse House’s myriad film and TV projects scored 42 total nominations.

Swinging up behind them, however, is a Sony project that very well might have been our favorite animated feature of the year: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman’s killer feature nabbed seven nominations, including a nod for best animated feature. It will also compete in categories celebrating direction, writing, and character design.

Joining Spider-Verse in the best animated feature category is Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks The Internet, Aardman Animations’ Early Man, and Wes Anderson’s Isle Of Dogs. Swap out Isle Of Dogs for Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation and you’ll see the same films competing in the best director category.

Meanwhile, the nominees for best animated independent feature are Beast Animation, Vivement Lundi!, and Pedri Animation’s Ce Magnifique Gateau!; Ankama/Studio 4ºC’s MFKZ; Studio Chizu’s Mirai; the Hungarian National Film Fund’s Ruben Brandt, Collector; and Tito and the Birds from Bits Productions and Split Studio.

Netflix led the charge in terms of broadcast animation, with projects like Big Mouth, Bojack Horseman, and Hilda helping the streamer score 26 total nominations. Big Mouth and Bojack will compete against Facebook Watch’s Human Kind Of, Adult Swim’s The Venture Bros., and Fox’s Bob’s Burgers in the best general audience animated television/broadcast production category.
