Independence Day 2 isn't coming out until 2016

The release date for Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day sequel has been pushed back by almost a year. Whereas aliens were set to once again attack the earth and destroy our houses of government beginning July 3, 2015, they’ll now have to wait all the way until July 1, 2016—because, obviously, a movie called Independence Day can't very well come out some other time of year.

The move could be both a good and bad thing for the movie and its director, who apparently still isn’t really sure whether or not Will Smith is going to star. According to Emmerich, scripts have been written both with and without Smith’s Captain Steven Hiller—though a number of other original characters appear in both. That said, to date, no one has been officially cast.
