Indonesia angry at Leonardo DiCaprio, somehow

Defying an international community that has come down hard on whether everybody pretty much likes Leonardo DiCaprio—we do, it turns out, to the tune of what nobody’s coming out and calling a Mr. Congeniality Oscar for his work on The Revenant—the Indonesian government has made some noises about banning the Titanic and Wolf Of Wall Street star from its borders. This unimaginable dislike stems from DiCaprio’s recent criticism of deforestation taking place in the country’s rain forests, where numerous animal habitats are being destroyed with slash-and-burn practices designed to facilitate the building of lucrative palm oil plantations

The actor lobbed the critiques via Instagram, utilizing the tried-and-true “fist bump an orangutan while being Leonardo DiCaprio” method of internet marketing. But Indonesian spokesman Heru Santoso was unmoved by DiCaprio’s rock-solid argument/cuteness, telling reporters, “We support his concern to save the Leuser ecosystem. But we can blacklist him from returning to Indonesia at any time if he keeps posting incitement or provocative statements in his social media.”

DiCaprio joins a small club of performers who’ve earned both our lasting, borderline-automatic affections, and the unrelenting ire of the Indonesian government; Harrison Ford has also been censured by government officials for his harsh criticisms of its agricultural practices.
