Issa Rae is still an Awkward Black Girl in the trailer for HBO’s Insecure
Actress and writer Issa Rae made a name for herself with her web series The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl, in which she played a young woman trying to navigate the heightened reality of twentysomething life. The series was popular enough to catch the eye of the pop-culture world, with support coming from such big names as Shonda Rhimes, Pharrell Williams, and Comedy Central’s Larry Wilmore.
Last year, Wilmore and Rae got together to pitch a new show to HBO, which eventually landed on the title Insecure. Going off of the show’s new trailer, it looks like Insecure will work as a sort of extension of Awkward Black Girl, with Rae playing yet another socially flailing young woman, beset by sarcastic teens and white people who constantly want her to bump their fists. (But hey, at least she’s got Cheetos and dip to get her and her friends through the hard times.) Insecure debuts on HBO sometime this fall.
