It looks like Legally Blonde 3 is really going to happen
According to Deadline, the Legally Blonde universe is about to get a bit blonder, as MGM is “near a deal” with Reese Witherspoon to make a third entry in her series of bubbly legal thrillers. “Most of the creative team” from the original film is reportedly on board already, with original writers Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah “in final talks” to write the script and original producer Marc Platt joining up with Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company set to produce. A director is not attached 7et, but the writers are apparently working already and things should start moving even faster once Witherspoon signs on.
Deadline’s story says the plan is to make Legally Blonde 3 “more about female empowerment” than Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, & Blonde was, with the goal being to hook the younger fans who grew up with the first movie on DVD or fell in love with its hit stage musical adaptation. That seems to imply that the new movie won’t be following its predecessor’s political angle, which involved Witherspoon’s character working with a congresswoman to ban animal testing, so we probably won’t get a glimpse of a perfect, joyous reality in which Elle Woods is the president instead of the stupid jackass we’ve got in real life.
