It’s Always Sunny feels some pride while Riverdale joins The Breakfast Club

Riverdale (The CW, 8 p.m.) / It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia (FXX, 10 p.m., finale): Every so often, when we set out to make our top pick for an evening, we find to our delight and frustration that there are two televisual happenings that seem to be of no slight importance. Tonight is one such evening. In one corner, we have Riverdale, putting its young starring cast to work as the high-school versions of the town’s resident grown-ups. That alone is kind of fun and novel, right? But it’s also called “The Midnight Club,” and if that title doesn’t make the episode’s general vibe clear, there’s also the presence of guest star Anthony Michael Hall to hammer the point home. Riverdale is best when it’s a little bonkers, and a Breakfast Club origin story about Gryphons and Gargoyles definitely seems to earn that description.
So that’s a contender, right? But over on FXX, Mac is struggling to find his place in the world as a gay man on the 13th finale of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and the final scenes are not to be missed. That’s about all we’ll say. And thus, two top picks. Enjoy.
