It’s Shots Fired as Fox looks to grab headlines

Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Wednesday, March 22. All times are Eastern.

Top Pick

Shots Fired (Fox, 8 p.m.) Hoping to join the ranks of other critically acclaimed series like American Crime that mine hot-button real-world issues for drama, Fox’s new series Shots Fired looks to do for police shooting scandals what basically no show has done for police shooting scandals: turn them into great TV drama. “When an African-American cop shoots and kills an unarmed white college student, a small town in North Carolina is turned upside-down. Before the town has a chance to cope with this tragedy, the neglected murder of an African-American teen is brought to light, opening wounds that threaten to tear the community apart.” So, a real laugh riot, then. Starring Sanaa Lathan, Stephan James, Stephen Moyer, and more, the 10-episode season is Fox’s latest bid for respectability.

Regular coverage:

Arrow (The CW, 8 p.m.)
The 100 (The CW, 9 p.m.)
Empire (Fox, 9 p.m.)
The Magicians (Syfy, 9 p.m.)
Designated Survivor (ABC, 10 p.m.)
Legion (FX, 10 p.m.)
The Expanse (Syfy, 10 p.m.)
Underground (WGN, 10 p.m.)

Wild card:

Independent Lens (PBS, 8 p.m.) In case you’ve been living in a fallout shelter for your entire life, Blast From The Past-style, here’s a documentary to let you know about how life in America for some kids might not actually be a paradise of perpetual comfort. This installment of the PBS series, called “The Bad Kids,” follows a year at a California high school for at-risk youth. If you need some inspiration in your life, this look at educators who refuse to give up on kids the system as a whole has decided are too far gone will probably fit the bill nicely.
