It sure looks like the Fast And Furious franchise is gearing up for a female-focused spin-off

The Fast And Furious franchise, still soaring since 2011's souped-up Fast Five veered the franchise into action spectacle, has a number of spin-offs in the hopper, from the upcoming Hobbs And Shaw team-up to, of all things, a Netflix animated series. The franchise’s next potential pivot, however, might be the one it’s long been aching for—a true showcase for the film’s underutilized roster of female characters.

Vin Diesel hinted at a female-focused spin-off late last year, but he seemed to confirm its development yesterday in a new Instagram post. In the post, which mentions a “female protagonist driven spinoff,” Diesel name-checks a trio of rising female screenwriters in Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dwore and, in classic Fast tradition, welcomes them to the “Fast FAMILY.” Cue the Coronas.

No official announcement’s been made, but it’s easy to assume the women have been hired to pen the potential spin-off. Their credits, after all, include writing gigs on high-profile projects like Captain Marvel, Guardians Of The Galaxy, Tomb Raider, and Detective Pikachu.

As /Film notes, it’s unlikely that Universal will turn the key until it sees how Hobbs And Shaw plays this summer. As such, plot details are scarce, so who knows if the movie will center around established characters like Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty Ortiz and Nathalie Emmanuel’s Ramsey or an altogether new band of car enthusiasts-turned-career criminals.

Nevertheless, Rodriguez should be pleased. After the release of 2017's Fate Of The Furious, she publicly urged producers to “show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one.” That next one, the ninth in the series, hits theaters in 2020.
