It's countdown to perestroika as The Americans begins its final season

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Wednesday, March 28. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

The Americans (FX, 10 p.m.): Considering the fourth season of The Americans ended with a scene that included TV coverage of Ronald Reagan’s infamous “We begin bombing in five minutes” joke, the show’s timeline is not far from the arrival of Mikhail Gorbachev and his sweeping political reforms. Actually, it might have already arrived, given the time jump that occurs between the two final seasons. (For more about that, check out our interview with showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields.) Regardless, it’s the looming end of the cold war for all intents and purposes. (But thanks, Putin, for the cool reboot we’re getting!) So the clock is presumably ticking for Philip and Elizabeth Jennings as the final season begins, and Operation: Kimmy’s Dad (this may not be the actual nickname for spying on the newly promoted head of the CIA’s Soviet Division) moves into high gear. TV editor Erik Adams will be there to monitor every moment.

Regular coverage

The Looming Tower (Hulu)
Riverdale (The CW, 8 p.m.)
Survivor (CBS, 8 p.m.)
Modern Family (ABC, 9 p.m.)

Wild card

Grown-ish (Freeform, 8 p.m.): The season finale is as good a place as any to drop in on Grown-ish, if you haven’t been keeping up with Zoey’s first year of college. You should, though—we’ve described it as filling “a sweet spot halfway between Degrassi and Undeclared.” Tonight, she’s got to make a decision about her love life—and wouldn’t you know it, everybody has an opinion on what she should do.
