It's not a school night, so spend some time with the students of America To Me

America To Me (Starz, 10 p.m.): Tomorrow’s Labor Day, and there’s a decent chance that you’ve got the day off. The temptation to, say, stay up until 2 a.m. watching reruns of The Golden Girls is probably pretty strong. Might we suggest spending at least part of your evening with some of the students of Oak Park River Forest High School? They’re the subjects of America To Me, Starz’s remarkable new documentary series from filmmaker Steve James (Hoop Dreams, Life Itself, The Interrupters, the list goes on), which aired its first episode last week and returns tonight. America To Me looks at the lives of Black and biracial students in a well-funded high school in an outwardly progressive community, and it’s a captivating portrait of these kids that simultaneously asks complex questions about how race and privilege can affect education. It’s very, very good, and The Golden Girls will still be waiting for you afterward.

Snapped: The BTK Serial Killer (Oxygen, 6 p.m.): What better way to make sure you stay awake for your ostensible Golden Girls binge than by watching this first? The BTK serial killer is so called because that’s the name he gave himself; it stands for bind, torture, kill. If you’re into the whole serial killer thing, then hey, go for it. If not, maybe use the time to catch up with Power (Starz, 8 p.m.), which airs the penultimate episode of its fifth season tonight.
